Batteries cause house fire
The fire service is warning homeowners to take extra precautions with lithiumion batteries after an investigation into a fire that destroyed a Stoke house last week showed it was started by “thermal runaway” in the batteries. Lesley and Leslie Morris lost their Arapiki Rd home last Friday after a fire that started in the garage razed the three-storey build-
ing. Nelson fire service specialist fire investigator Craig Piner confirmed on Tuesday that the fire appeared to be started by the failure of lithium-ion batteries. “I haven’t finished the investigation yet but, at this stage, it’s looking like charging batteries was the issue,” Craig says. “There’s been a few house fires caused by these batteries, so it’s not that uncommon.

of thermal runaway. “There are lots of different versions of these batteries, but the ones they had were good quality and they had a good charger too - these things just happen.” Craig says people should take a number of precautions when handling lithium-ion batteries including charging them in a fire-proof container and making sure they don’t over-charge the batteries. It is also critical to dispose of damaged batteries, he says. “It can happen with cellphone batteries. People drop their phone and damage the battery and it fails and starts producing heat.” The New Zealand Fire Service advises that it is important to use the correct charger and never leaving charging batteries unattended.

It also warns against leaving batteries inside a car on a hot day or any other place where temperature may exceed 60 degrees Celsius as well as putting loose batteries in a pocket, bag, drawer or on metal surfaces where they could shortcircuit against other items.

For 20 local novice boxers, this week will be the longest they’ve felt for some time. The second edition of the Fight 4 Victory corporate boxing fundraiser is this Saturday night at Saxton Stadium and the fighters say they can’t wait. After three months of hard training, they will go face-toface for the official weigh-in on Thursday night at McCashin’s Brewery, before finally going toe-to-toe on Saturday night. A bout between an army sergeant and a police sergeant is the main event, but organiser Paul Hampton says there will be ten great fights throughout the night. “We’re really happy with the match-ups, everyone’s been training really hard and working really hard, so it will be quite a show.” Tickets for the event are still available but the corporate tables sold out months ago. Paul says he’s hoping for a big crowd. “We’re really lucky that the event is already a money maker with the number of corporate tables we sold, but it would be great to fill the stands as well and get a great atmosphere go-

Hunt for rare ‘grey ghost’
A ball of moss isn’t the kind of thing that most people get excited about, but for Mapua ornithologist Rhys Buckingham it’s the biggest news in years. That’s because Rhys is convinced that the distinctive moss scrapings found in bush in the Marsden Valley near Stoke are a sure sign that one of the country’s rarest birds, the South Island Kokako, is Rhys Buckingham with one of the moss scrapings that is a sign of the South Island Kokako, also living in the area. very excited.’ The moss scrapings were initially found by a member of the Marsden Valley Trapping Group, Don Sullivan, and Rhys says that discovery, along with the earlier unverified sightings of the bird in the same area, was enough encouragement to organise a search. However, Rhys says finding the notoriously elusive and shy bird, which is known as the grey ghost, won’t be easy. The South Island Kokako is grey with an orangecoloured wattle and has an organlike song. “We’ll be using motion-sensor cameras and acoustic equipment, which we’ll place near the site where the moss scrapings were found. Once we set it up it will only be a matter of maintaining it. “We won’t have much chance of sighting the bird so we’re relying on modern technology. I’ve only seen it once but I couldn’t get a photo. It’s a real ghost.”

Driver gets caught picking up kid while drunk A Nelson driver, nearly four times over the legal limit, was stopped by police at a checkpoint while on their way to pick up a child from a rural school. The driver returned a breath alcohol level of 973mcg. The current limit for drivers over 20 is 250mcg, with the previous limit being 400mcg. HEADLINERS Fire destroys Stoke couple’s home: A house fire left two retired Nelsonians with only the clothes on their backs, as their Arapiki Rd home burned to the ground on Friday. Black smoke was seen from as far away as Motueka, Richmond and Nelson. At least four fire trucks from Nelson, Richmond and Stoke fire stations attended the fire. Orca Sighting at Tahunaui: A pod of orcas were sighted at the back of Tahunanui Beach yesterday, including a mother with her calf. Fire extinguished by residents: Firefighters were busy on Friday with a fire at a lower Parkers Rd address. The fire burned out a sleepout and was suspected to have started from a battery charger. Adventure tourism student, Tyler Isherwood, was staying in the sleepout and lost around $200 worth of newly-purchased tourism gear. Residents managed to put out the fire using a garden hose and a fire extinguisher. Street piano turns 1: It’s been a year since Richmond’s street piano was introduced to Sundial Square and the occasion was marked with a mini concert. Some talented local musicians set up outside Ambrosia cafe last week to play a handful of songs for those with the time to sit down and listen and those just passing by. A large crowd attended this year’s annual Positive Ageing Expo which was held in Richmond last week. The expo, which aims to raise awareness about health and recreation services in the community for older people, was officially opened by Maggie Barry, Minister for Senior Citizens. Tasman District Council and Nelson City Council are principal sponsors of the free event which featured 73 stallholders providing information on various health, hobbies, sports and recreation, government services and support groups for senior citizens. “We would like to thank the people for turning out, the feedback from the event has been warm and positive. It is an acknowledgement of the changing demographics in our region and it is a chance

We have had a lot of interest in the electronic bidet today, it is something that people haven’t seen before,” says Sue Birchfield of Access Mobility. Plenty of spot prizes were also on offer, including a Wilson’s Abel Tasman cruise for two, Richmond Mall, Fresh Choice, Queen Street Pharmacy and Stacey vouchers, a Mitre 10 cargo trolley and a $100 Trustpower voucher. Neighbours Day celebrated
Residents of one Richmond subdivision are planning to make Neighbours Day Aotearoa celebrations an annual event after enjoying a friendly get-together on Sunday. Neighbours Day is a community-led campaign aimed at bringing together the people next door or across the street to turn strangers into neighbours. It is held the last weekend in March and last Sunday residents on Bramley and McCauley streets in Richmond celebrated the occasion with a backyard barbecue. The Bramley Bunch, as they affectionately call themselves, first got together for Neighbours Day last year and had such a
good time that they decided to do it again this year. Nickie and Peter Fitzgerald, who are part of Neighbourhood Support, organised the barbecue which was held in their backyard and attended by about 30 residents. “About half of the people who live in this area are Christchurch earthquake refugees and our experiences there have made it important that we get together,” says Nickie. She put flyers in letterboxes and emailed neighbours inviting them to the barbecue. She also contacted Marty Price at Waimea Neighbourhood Support, who provided vouchers for sausages.

SPCA, Wednesday, March 18: After their article in the Weeklys reporting an overwhelming number of stray cats and kittens, SPCA staff were pleased with the positive response and number of adoptions, another four finding new homes over the weekend. Nelson SPCA general manager, Donna Walzl, says that while they were pleased with the adoptions, more cats and kittens are still coming into them and she encourages anyone interested in a new kitten to come and see them. Donna also urges people to de-sex their pets to avoid unwanted litters.

Geoff Golding can talk about Austin-Healeys for hours and has been working with cars since he was in “short pants”. As an area representative for the AustinHealey car club in the upper South Island, Geoff says he is ready to rev up a storm this weekend with Nelson hosting this year’s Austin-Healey Car Rally. The rally gives enthusiasts a chance to show off their cars and discuss all things AustinHealey. “It’s that glue that binds everyone together, we all have a common interest group.” The Austin-Healey was created when Donald Healey mocked up his sports car design for a motorshow in Britain. The Austin company combined this with their leftover mechanical parts to create the first line of Austin-Healeys in 1953. “They’re a sports car, they’re relatively cheap. The early models were 100mph motor car, here in Nelson they used to race on the beach,” says Geoff.
“All of a sudden there were these old sports cars sitting around in sheds and people said “well they look pretty good”. They’re timeless in their appearance.” Around 60 Austin-Healey cars will gather in the region to take part in the four day rally including 18 groups shipping cars over from Australia to compete. The weekend sets off on Friday night with a social gathering before heading off to the Grape Escape on Saturday morning. Here the public has a chance to take a look at the classic cars before they continue on to Mapua for lunch. A navigation run to the A and P Showgrounds in Richmond will end with a best car competition and then driving tests will take place. “There’s a bit of speed involved hence the middle of a racecourse. Cars will slide on the wet grass, that’s enormous fun,” Geoff says. On Sunday, the competitors will travel to Takaka and an AGM will be held on the Monday.

Poppy donations ‘a shock’

A request for handmade poppies for a display at Nelson Cathedral has had such a remarkable response the coordinator has been left “shocked”. Susan Holland came up with the idea to make a giant display by hanging homemade woollen or fabric poppies in the Nelson Cathedral to commemorate 100 years since the Gallipoli landings. The idea isn’t new, with other parts of New Zealand and Australia doing a similar concept. But Susan says the reaction from Nelsonians has been fantastic. “I didn’t expect the response would be quite so much as it is. I’ve been quite shocked.” When Susan spoke with Waimea Weekly last September, her goal was to have 1000 poppies made and donated by locals. She has well over 3000, with another two weeks before the display goes up. Susan is a part of the Nelson Creative Fibre Group which has led the project, but says donations have come from all around the region with good support from the local libraries and wool shops. “There are patterns online or people could make their own, and it really got people interested in what we do,” says Susan. “We’ve done displays in the Richmond Library and local wool shops have been fantastic too.” The poppies are glued to a five metre by one metre sheet of hessian and will hang in front of the two big windows inside the Cathedral. The display will go up on April 10. Susan says the group just needs some galvanised poles donated to slide through the top of the display. The pipes need to be at least 1200mm long and anyone who may be able to help can contact Susan on 547 4329.

Support for Victory Boxing: Kia Ora. I am a Maori student who attends Youth Nelson. A few weeks ago I read an article about Victory Boxing and the positive affect on the community it has. I agree with this because my friend goes there and I have watched his progress and how much he has achieved.

Victory Boxing is a place where kids can go to stay off the streets. It’s a safe place for them to go after school to work out and meet other people who are doing good things for others. Not only does it help the teenagers who are at risk of getting into trouble with the police, but it also helps the younger children in need. There is a monitoring programme where the older students teach and coach the younger ones. in all sorts of ways for a franchise store. I arrived to initially find the end of the queue at the door. And that queue did end up outside the door at times. I saw two till operators working very hard to keep the lines moving. One till was unattended throughout. I also noticed a person doing tasks that at the time seemed trivial to the needs of the customers. I refer to her walking around behind the counter wiping benches and generally doing very little when her staff were working tirelessly to get the queues moving. This lady had a badge on that stated she was the Asst Manager of the store. I asked her if she could supply another till operator to assist with the queues of people. I was told firmly that if I had a complaint I was to call head office and complain to them. I was polite in my request having never been in this store before, I thought a little assistance in looking at the big picture would help her and her team out. That was not the case. I also noticed a team member having his dinner at the busiest time of the day. The drive-through has one window for ordering and serving, this queue was so long cars where turning around and moving somewhere else. I note that the staff who were serving were working damned hard. I was told by members of the queue that it was always like this here. I asked them why they come back here if that was the case. They said they have to put up with it because Motueka was to far to go for their

Trappers kept busy as pest numbers grow Simon Bloomberg
Volunteer trapping groups around Nelson and Tasman have been working overtime catching thousands of pests to help protect native birds with one group in St Arnaud trapping a record 3750 predators last year. Scientists had predicted a plague of rats and mice this season after one of the heaviest falls of beech tree seeds in decades. The seeds are an important food source for rats and mice which not only prey on bird’s eggs but are also eaten by deadlier predators like cats, stoats and weasels. “The rats were the biggest problem because there were so many of them and they eat the bird’s eggs,” Friends of Rotoiti volunteer, Peter Hale says. “But we also targeted rats because stoats eat the rats and if there’s lots of rats around the stoats have bigger litters - it’s all linked together.” Friends of Rotoiti trapped an astounding 3750 predators around St Arnaud and sites adjacent to the Rotoiti Nature Recovery

Ian Price also reported an increase in pests on Paermata Flat, Bishop’s Peninsula and Cable Bay with 24 rats and 118 mice trapped in February. A trap line that is used as an index caught 54 rats and mice compared to just nine last February. Richmond Hills trapping groups have not recorded a big increase in rat numbers this season but have caught a staggering 4022 mice and 2406 rats, 588 possums and 157 stoats since trapping started in 2005. Volunteer trapper Will Rickerby is hoping the comparatively low catches this season could be an indication that the trappers are “on top of the rat populations” in the Richmond Hills. Although the trappers have been super busy this season, they are all happy to spend the countless hours clearing, setting and making traps to help the native bird populations recover. “I’ve done a lot of tramping over the years and I’ve always wanted to see the birdlife come back into the bush,” Ian says. And their efforts certainly seem to be paying off with numbers of native birds including tui, bellbirds, weka, keruru and robins increasing in the Marsden Valley. “It’s all about helping protect the native birds,” Peter, who has retired in St Arnaud, says. “It’s our country and it’s out heritage and it’s not just the Department of Conservation’s job to protect it.” Many of the trapping groups are supported by Pic’s Peanut Butter and Ewings Poultry who supply products for baiting the traps, as well as Mitre 10 and Summit Real Estate who supply material for traps. DOC and Nelson City Council also provide some funding for the groups.

Waimea hosts Shakespeare festival Around 100 thespians from Nelson, Tasman and Golden Bay took part in the University of Otago Sheilah Winn Regional Shakespeare Festival held at Waimea College over the weekend. This year Tasman and Nelson Districts combined to present one festival, which saw 38 groups from seven secondary schools performing five to fifteen minute scenes from various Shakespeare plays. The Festival scope is wide as students act, direct, serve as crew, compose music, write essays, create costumes and design artwork for their performances. Students could set their scenes in any period or style as long as they used Shakespeare’s words. Waimea College year 10 students won best comedy, most original costume and best choreographed scene for their modern interpretation of A Midsummers Night’s Dream. Directed by Melanie Stewart, head of music and performing arts at the college, the scene was set in an alley behind a supermarket and costumes and props included shopping bags and trolleys. Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Well, the seasons are on the change again, which means the fish are all over the place. As quick as the grapevine tells you where they are, they move on to somewhere new. However, there is still some great fishing to be had if you end up in the right place at the right time. Pannies and some bigger model snapper are still being caught locally in the blind channel, Tahuna Beach and Kina Bluffs areas. For further afield, fishing from Nelson to Delaware Bay and Hori Bay down to Cape Soucis are all producing good catches. Recently, the Dawnbreakers Fishing club held its family weekend down at Havelock. The fishing was pretty tough all round but Loren McPherson hooked a great 19 lb snapper to keep her hubby Ollie out of the running for the overall heaviest snapper prize. Congrats Loren. Rat kingies are making it difficult at times to get the lures and jigs passed them to the heavier greenback models, but this massive population growth has done wonders for the Nelson recreational fishos, a lot of whom have had some great tussles on light gear with these little yellow tail torpedoes. Blue cod are in good numbers and sizes, and, with a possible change of local rules on the cards, these will become a mainstay catch for many as a fine table fish. Gurnard are another good tasting table fish that are in large numbers

To target these, use small flasher rigs with smelly baits like pilchard cubes, and don't be scared to drag the sinker along the bottom which will stir up some sand to activate their feed time senses. Alternatively, small jigs like jitterbugs and bottomships will also be quite effective on the 'carrots'. Richmond’s newest homeware store, Bed Bath & Beyond exceeded sales expectations during its four day sale last week. New Zealand’s largest manchester specialist, opened its 52nd store in early March and Regional Manager Cathy Crichton, says it was good to see an increase in awareness of the new store. “The sale was fantastic, there was a steady stream of people coming through the doors and everyone seemed to like the 50% off. It was great to see people supporting a New Zealand company,” says Cathy. The new store features a mix of new and existing staff which includes a qualified interior designer to help customers with design and colour. The company is enjoying servicing customers in Richmond and its outer lying rural areas. “The company has been involved in the Nelson region for quite some time now, with a store in Trafalgar St but it has always been on the cards to open a store in Richmond and it is great that it has finally come to fruition,” says Cathy. Tasman Swim Club’s rising star, Sam McKenzie, set 12 of the 17 new records established at the club’s swim meet at the ASB Aquatic Centre over the weekend with his 100m freestyle time unofficially faster than the national record. Sam broke records in the Nelson-Marlborough age and open categories in the 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle events. The Waimea College student set four records in the preliminary heats before breaking them again in the finals - the only reason he didn’t set a national record in the 100m was that it wasn’t timed electronically. Garin College’s Thomas Heaton, 16, also had a successful meeting breaking three records in the 200m, 400m and 1500m freestyle events. Team-mate Talya Harwood (Waimea College) broke a 400m freestyle record. Nayland College’s Oliver Stark broke the 100m backstroke record. Eighty swimmers from Nelson and Marlborough competed at the meeting with half of all the swims being new personal best times. Qualifying for next year’s national age group champs for the first time were Cassie Hagan (Nelson College for Girls), James Fleury (Garin College) and Xavier Anderson (Waimea College) from the Tasman Swim Club. Bendi Kepess (Waimea Intermediate and Tasman Swim Club) took over a minute off his 1500m freestyle time, Sierra Thomas (Waimea Intermediate and Tasman) took 47 seconds off her 800m freestyle time and club-mate Abbey Smale (Parklands School) shaved 43 seconds off her time in the same event. Maia Hughes (Birchwood School and Waimea Swimming Club) smashed her 50m breaststroke time.

Harriers celebrate half century with half marathon

“At one stage, we had a man in his 80’s running in our club who ran a half marathon in 2hrs 45mins and I said to my friends, if it takes me 1hr and 45mins to run a half marathon, then shoot me. When I was 70years old, I ran a half marathon and it took me 1hr and 43mins so I said that is enough, I am stopping now,” says Maarten. Although he liked running in competitions, he enjoyed the friendships made over the years. “We had lots of fun over the years, the company was good,” says Maarten. His son Ted, who originally introduced his dad to the sport, is now 61 and involved in orienteering, and is a former age group Rogaine World Champion. Although Maarten’s sandshoes have been put away he is still very active and walks and cycles regularly, but says he doesn’t enjoy it half as much as running. Waimea Harriers 50th anniversary celebrations will be held on Sunday, June 21. Past and present members will have the opportunity to meet and compete in either a half marathon, marathon, or be part of a six person relay team over the marathon distance. This will be followed by a dinner in the evening at the Honest Lawyer. To recognise the club’s anniversary year, financial members will all receive a commemorative singlet, T shirt or polo shirt. Waimea Harriers Club will celebrate its 50 year anniversary this year with patron, Maarten van Geldermalsen, awarded a life membership for running the extra mile for the club since its humble beginnings. Over its 50 year history, the only remaining foundation member has been involved with the club as secretary, president, committee member and patron. He still helps out regularly with time keeping and putting out road cones for races. In recognition of his services to the club, Maarten will be awarded life membership at the 50 year anniversary dinner along with other members, Duncan Mitchell, Liz and Alan Eskrick, Bill Ferguson and Craig Harford. Maarten was first introduced to running by his son Ted, who at the time was training with Grant Nelson, son of 1948 Olympian Harold Nelson, at Nelson College. Ted asked his father if he could take him along to the Athletics Nelson Club. “He said to bring my sandshoes with me, I was 37 at the time and had never raced in a running club before, but I decided to have a go,” says Maarten. From then on he was hooked on running, and a little while later Harold suggested to Maarten that Richmond should start a harriers club of its own. In May 1965, a meeting was held and the Richmond Harriers Club was formed. Its first run was on April 24, with a field of 32 runners who wore a simple uniform of a white singlet with red band featuring the letter R on it. At that time, there were three other harrier clubs in the region, including Nelson, Tra-

Richmond league star excels against Warriors Richmond’s Marvin Curry has a bright future ahead of him in rugby league after scoring a stand out try in a match against the Vodafone Warriors development team in Auckland. Marvin, who was born in Samoa, moved to Nelson with his family six years ago and has proven to be an all-round talented athlete. He represented Samoa in an invitational XIII rugby league team when playing against the Vodafone Warriors de-
velopment team earlier this month. “It was a privilege to be chosen to play for Samoa, it has been one of my dreams to represent my country of birth in any sport,” says Marvin. The Nelson College for Boys year 13 student was playing right centre when he scored during the match, which saw, the Warriors team win 34-8. youngster play and liked what they saw. As a result, Australian NRL player agents Jim Banaghan and Steve Gillis have shown an interest in working with him. Marvin who is part of the South Island Rugby League Academy, says he likes the centre position but also enjoys playing fullback, in the halves or on the wing. “I really enjoy playing rugby league as there is more space to run and not as many stoppages as rugby. In rugby I used to play
on the wing and not touch the ball very much, in rugby league I get plenty of ball and it is a lot faster,” says Marvin. At 16, under New Zealand Rugby League rules, Marvin is too young to play for an open first grade rugby league team, so he will likely play rugby union for his school before returning to league for the Tasman Titans under-17 team. His ultimate goal is to play at a professional level in an NRL team.

Tackle leads to broken leg Tapawera teacher and amateur photographer Susan Fenemor has taken some great shots over the years, but last Saturday she captured one moment that she wished never happened. Susan, who often has her photos published in the Waimea Weekly, was photographing the division two club rugby game between Tapawera and Rangers at Upper Moutere. She was in perfect position as her son Jonathan raced towards the try line, but as well as capturing a match-winning try she photographed the exact moment when he broke his leg.
“I was clicking for the try and, of course, I had about 10 shots before and couple afterwards.” Susan says. “But I didn’t realise what had happened until a team-mate tried to help him up and it was clear that things weren’t right” Once it was apparent Jonathan was injured, Susan says the team manager, who is a trained first aider ran on to help out. She also went over to the deadball line to see that he was alright. Susan says Jonathan had surgery at Nelson Hospital on Sunday, with a rod and screws inserted in his broken leg.

Waimea Old Boys Rugby
Waimea aim to make it three from three Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys will be aiming to “simplify things” when they take on Kahurangi at Riwaka in their round three Tasman Trophy club rugby match this Thursday night. Waimea may have scored five tries in their 31-7 bonus point win against Marist but coach Mark Milne was not entirely happy. “We weren’t direct enough and tried to play too much rugby too early. We’ll needed to simplify things and get some go forward before we go wide.” However, Mark says the team’s defensive effort was outstanding especially inside their 22. Waimea’s fitness was also a factor in a strong last quarter. “Our defence was very aggressive and I thought our fitness in the last 20 minutes made a difference.” Waimea led 10-7 at half time before scoring three second half tries to prop Misi Nale, fullback Iliesa Ravudra and Crusaders flanker Pete Samu. Pete and winger Viliami Lolohea scored the first half tries. Mark expects playing Kahurangi on their home ground to “be a real challenge”. “It’s always a difficult ground to play especially at night.” The game kicks off at 7.30pm. Waimea Old Boys senior B won their division two game against Marist 33-0.

Rates Rebate Deadline
Road Closures to Ordinary Vehicular Traffic
The rates rebate deadline for 2014-2015 rating year is quickly approaching. Applications MUST be in before 30 June 2015 to be accepted. The Rates Rebate Scheme operates under the Rates Rebate Act 1973. The purpose of the Scheme is to provide a subsidy to low income home owners on the cost of their rates. The maximum rebated for this rating year is $605. Forms are held in each of the Council’s offices. These have a Rates Rebate Income Eligibility Table on the front. The property you are applying for must be your principal place of residence. You cannot claim a rates rebate for the rates payable on a property that is used principally for business, farming, commercial or industrial purposes, or a home that is not your usual place of residence.
